Ambit Energy Pennsylvania History & Intro

Pennsylvania was the 5th state expansion for Ambit Energy and launched spring of 2011.  Having launched Maryland with massive and immediate success just months prior, Pennsylvania seemed destined for a similar outcome.  Massive success is now the end outcome, but it didn’t happen immediately.

The initial slow growth was a result of a similar situation we had experienced in Texas back when the company first launched… somebody got there first.  That company was Ignite Energy, the same company that had a head start on us in Texas.  Having not expanded in several years prior to Pennsylvania, Ignite associates where quick to bombard PA with the few months of a head start they had to work with.  They did a heck of a job I have to give them credit… but the end result has been the same. Ambit Energy simply has a better value proposition for both customers and consultants and as a result we’ve taken the lead again.  For a detailed look at the differences between our two companies, check out our in-depth Ignite Energy comparison.

Fast forward a couple years and today the strong growth from Pennsylvania is one of the major reasons we continue to grow faster than any other company in our industry.  Ambit Energy also recently announced expansion into 4 new service territories covering most of the Keystone State, so you could not have picked a better time to get started with the fastest growing private company in America.

Ambit Energy’s Pennsylvania Coverage Map

Ambit Energy currently operates in the following service territories of Pennsylvania…

• PECO provides electricity to the southeastern part of the state
• PPL (Pennsylvania Power and Light) delivers electricity to 29 counties in central and eastern Pennsylvania
• Duquesne Light provides electricity for southwestern Pennsylvania
• Columbia Gas provides gas to Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania
• National Fuel delivers gas to Northwestern Pennsylvania, including Erie and Sharon
• Peoples Natural Gas supplies gas to Southwestern Pennsylvania

As you see the map below shows the general territory outline but it’s not an exact science.  To know if Ambit Energy will be able to service your customer you should change the question you ask from “where do you live” to “who is your service provider” because at the end of the day Ambit Energy can service any customer whose is served by one of the above named utility providers.

New Expansions Announced for January, 2012!

Ambit announced a ton of Pennsylvania expansion at Ambition 2012.  Four new territories will be added in January of 2013 including West Penn Power, Penn Power, Penelec & Met Ed.  With these new territories Ambit Energy will have the vast majority of Pennsylvania covered for electric service.

Future Ambit Energy Pennsylvania Expansions?

I honestly don’t know much about the remaining territories in Pennsylvania left to conquer.  There are a few more electric territories left but currently there is little to no competition in these territories and I imagine there is a reason for the lack of interest in these territories like UGI & Pike Country Light & Power so I honestly don’t expect Ambit to do any additional electric expansion any time soon.  As for natural gas there are several more territories left and I’m sure Ambit will get to them in due time but with so much electric coverage to play with, I’m not too worried about the time frame personally.

Ambit Energy Pennsylvania – Customer Basics

Service Reliability, Storm Outage & Customer Service

Many people are worried they will receive inferior service or be last on the block to get their electricity restored during a storm outage.  I often have to fight back the urge to laugh at the question, but simply put the answer is a resounding… NO.

Taken straight from the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission

Remember, regardless of who generates your electricity, you will continue to call your electric utility for outages, emergency services and questions about your residential service. The quality, reliability, and maintenance of your electric service should not change as it is still monitored by the PUC.

So whether you like or hate the service you’ve received from your local utility company it will not change one iota because your local utility provider (PPL, PECO, etc…) will continue to provide all services related to delivery which include reading your meter, taking care of repairs during a storm outage and even billing… so the only thing that changes is the price you pay.

Ambit Energy Pennsylvania Service Plans – Variable, Fixed, Green & Commercial

Standard Variable – This is a non-contract plan offering a competitive price per kWh that changes on a monthly basis based on moving market conditions.  This plan really doesn’t make any sense in most cases simply because of the unique nature of our next plan…

Standard Fixed – We also offer contract/term plans that lock in a set per kWh for a 12 month period so that consumers can achieve price security. Normally contract/term plans with other companies carry what’s called an ETA (early termination fee) to prevent customers from switching to a competitor or cancelling within the contract period. Ambit Energy does NOT tack on such a fee in Pennsylvania so essentially there is no reason a customer should not choose the contract/term plan because with Ambit Energy they get the price security of a contract with the flexibility of a variable plan.

Green Variable & Fixed – Ambit’s Green-e certified plans are essentially identical to the non-green plans in all aspects except price. Green plans from any company are always going to be more expensive because REC’s (renewable energy certificates) must be purchased to offset the usage. It is not possible to actually control the electrons so customers on a green plan actually get green energy so Ambit Energy uses Green-e certified REC’s  which have independent verification to ensure the extra money you pay for a green plan gets properly directed to local renewable energy initiatives in Pennsylvania.

Commercial – Ambit offers standard variable & fixed along with green variable & fixed plans for small commercial customers.  Additional details can be found within Pennsylvania Small Commercial Fact Sheet.

Ambit Energy Pennsylvania Rates

Our rates vary by individual territory and change regularly so it’s not possible to keep up-to-date rates on this page but one thing you can count on is that Ambit is committed to providing a discount compared to the default utility provider. Taking PPL as an example, if their rates go up that means our rates will likely go up but not as much, their rates go down we will go down a bit farther. There may be a short adjustment period in a changing marketplace but as a general rule Ambit will always price below the default utility provider which in this example is PPL. On the other hand it is not possible to always be priced the cheapest among the entire array of deregulated energy supply companies that we compete with on a head to head basis but we will always be priced below what most consumers are comparing against. Click here to check current Ambit Energy rates.

Ambit Energy Pennsylvania Billing

As a licensed energy supply company in the state of Pennsylvania, Ambit Energy is not involved in the delivery process, which includes the billing.  What this means is you will continue to receive the same bill from the same local utility company except after switching to Ambit Energy you will notice a line item notation on the supply portion of the bill indicating Ambit Energy as your new energy supply company.
