Ambit Energy New York Basics
New York was the 2nd state expansion for Ambit Energy and launched Spring of 2007. We were super excited to be expanding but to be perfectly honest, I had my doubts as to how well it would go.
Understand at the time Ambit as a company was still less than a year old and all we knew was how things worked in Texas. In Texas at the time savings were serious, most people still had not switched from the incumbent provider so savings of 15 – 25% were commonplace when people switched to Ambit Energy. Now we go into New York and we’re looking at the 1% Savings Guarantee plan which didn’t seem to have too much sizzle, especially when dealing with New Yorkers who usually took it as “only 1% savings” versus “minimum of 1% savings. On top of all this we found out that to do business outside of Texas we would be dealing with a reduced residual payout. I wasn’t so sure it would work!
Boy were my doubts squashed!
New York quickly became Ambit’s fastest growing state and it didn’t take long before it was the biggest state by number of customers and consultants. At one point we were getting about 85% of all the customer switches in the entire state versus every other ESCO in New York combined! I’m sure this ratio has backed off by now but suffice to say the Savings Guarantee and the compensation plan have done just fine. Today Ambit Energy is the only network marketing energy company to the best of my knowledge that has expanded into every deregulated territory of the New York and we continue to grow faster than any other company in our industry.

As previously mentioned, Ambit Energy has already opened up for service in all of the available deregulated territories of New York. What this simply means is that we can service any customer of any one of the following 8 utility companies within the state of New York…
- Con Edison supplies electricity and gas to areas of New York City and Westchester County
- National Grid provides electricity and gas to areas of upstate New York
- Keyspan Gas provides gas to areas of Long Island, Metro and Upstate
- NYSEG provides electricity and gas to parts of upstate and most of southern New York
- RGE provides electricity and gas to portions of upstate New York
- Orange & Rockland brings electricity and gas to the northwestern suburbs of New York City
- Central Hudson Gas & Electric supplies electricity and gas to the Mid-Hudson River Valley area
- National Fuel provides gas for western New York
These 8 unique service territories combine to make up Ambit Energy’s New York coverage which can be seen in the map below. There are some small cities and areas that Ambit does not service which is usually a result of the utilities in a small town/city being owned by the actual city itself and thus being exempt from deregulation.
Ambit Energy New York – Customer Basics
Service Reliability, Storm Outage & Customer Service
Many people are worried they will receive inferior service or be last on the block to get their electricity restored during a storm outage. I often have to fight back the urge to laugh at the question, but simply put the answer is a resounding… NO.
Taken straight from the New York Board of Public Utilities…
Your current utility will still deliver electricity to your home or business through its existing transmission and distribution system. You will still call your utility if your power goes out, or if you have an emergency situation related to your power.
So whether you like or hate the service you’ve received from your local utility company it will not change one iota because your local utility provider (ConEd, National Grid, etc…) will continue to provide all services related to delivery which include reading your meter, taking care of repairs during a storm outage and even billing… so the only thing that changes is the price you pay.
Ambit Energy New York Rates & Plans
Variable 1% Savings Guarantee – As mentioned in the intro section above, Ambit Energy took a very unique approach in New York by offering the Savings Guarantee Plan which essentially guarantees that over a 12 month period customers are guaranteed to have saved at least 1% or Ambit will send a check for the difference. There was and is still nothing like this plan on the market and it has been instrumental in lowering the barrier to entry and fear of change that many people have allowing Ambit to acquire customer much easier than our competition in New York.
Green Variable – Ambit’s Green-e certified plan in New York is similar to the savings guarantee plan in the sense that the actual rate being charged will be slightly more and as such the savings guarantee cannot be offered. Ambit only marks up as much as needed to purchase the REC’s (renewable energy certificates) necessary to offset the usage and thus qualify as “green” energy. It is not possible to actually control the electrons so customers on a green plan actually get green energy so Ambit Energy uses Green-e certified REC’s which have independent verification to ensure the extra money you pay for a green plan gets properly directed to local renewable energy initiatives in New York.

Ambit Energy New York Billing
As a licensed ESCO (Energy Service Company) in the State of New York, Ambit Energy is not involved in the delivery process, which includes the billing. What this means is you will continue to receive the same bill from the same local utility company except after switching to Ambit Energy you will notice a line item notation on the supply portion of the bill indicating Ambit Energy as your new energy supply company.
