Ambit Energy Texas Basics
Texas was where it all started for Ambit Energy back in late summer of 2006 and in my opinion it is the most fully deregulated and developed market for energy in the world. What I mean by this is deregulation is common knowledge to everybody and many people have not only switched providers but many have done so many times. What this means for us is that it’s no longer a process of educating the prospects on deregulation but simply gathering loyal customers who want to align with a solid reputable company like Ambit Energy.
One of the challenges early on was the fact that Ambit was launched in the shadow of an already highly successful network marketing energy company called Ignite Energy that had nearly a 2 year head start. Ambit Energy lead by Jere Thompson and Chris Chambless made a commitment to raise the bar to create a competitive edge in as many ways as possible, all the significant aspects of which I’ve broken down in my detailed review of Ignite Energy which can be found in the Ambit Versus Competition section.
Today Ambit is thriving in Texas and with well under 5% market penetration, we have a very long way to go before there will be any slowing down.

Ambit Energy’s Texas Coverage Map
Ambit Energy operates in all the deregulated areas of Texas. The major service territories include but are not limited to…
- AEP Texas provides electricity to residents throughout southern and western Texas
- CenterPoint Energy provides electricity to the 5,000 square mile footprint of the Houston metropolitan area
- Oncor provides electricity to residents of northern, western and central Texas
- TNMP provides electricity for western and northern central Texas, as well as areas of the Gulf Coast region
The areas not included in this coverage map are not deregulated for retail competition, which can be the case for one of three primary reasons…
- Coop utility companies were granted an exemption from deregulation and thus most of the rural areas of Texas are not partaking in the deregulated market
- City owned utility companies were granted an exemption from deregulation and so you have San Antonio & Austin not partaking in deregulation
- Utility companies/territories not yet integrated into the Texas grid (Entergy & El Paso Electric as examples) which makes it impossible to partake in deregulation as it currently stands.
Ambit Energy Texas – Customer Basics
Service Reliability, Storm Outage & Customer Service
While most consumers in Texas understand how deregulation there are still a few holdouts and people moving in from out of state that are worried if will receive inferior service or be last on the block to get their electricity restored during a storm outage. The simply put the answer is a resounding… NO.
Take straight from the Texas Public Utilities Commission…
Regardless of which Retail Electric Provider you choose, the actual delivery of the electricity is still provided by your local Transmission and Distribution Service Provider (TDSP). Your TDSP will continue to be responsible for maintaining the poles, wires, and meter that deliver and measure the electricity consumed by your home or business, for reading your meter and providing the amount of electricity that you consume to your REP, and for restoring service when there is a power outage.
Ambit Energy Texas Service Plans – Variable, Fixed, Green & Commercial
Variable – This is a non-contract plan offering a price per kWh that changes on a monthly basis based on moving market conditions. This plan is NOT the best value for consumers because there is no price security and rates will begin to fluctuate quickly.
Fixed – Ambit Energy’s most popular options are contract/term plans that lock in a specific per kWh rate for set term periods that currently range from 6 months to 2 years. Contract plan are the norm in Texas for all retail energy providers and in my 6 years of experience, a contract plan is where the best value is achieved. The rates within variable plans are significantly higher plain and simple. Our job then as Ambit Energy consultants is to provide this expertise and help customers get the best deal by always renewing from one contract to another.
Green Variable & Fixed – Ambit’s Green-e certified plans are essentially identical to the non-green plans in all aspects except price. Green plans from any company are always going to be more expensive because REC’s (renewable energy certificates) must be purchased to offset the usage. It is not possible to actually control the electrons so customers on a green plan actually get green energy so Ambit Energy uses Green-e certified REC’s which have independent verification to ensure the extra money you pay for a green plan gets properly directed to local renewable energy initiatives in Texas.
Commercial – Ambit offers competitive small commercial term plans ranging from 12 to 36 months. Additional details can be found within Texas Small Commercial Fact Sheet.
